Every summer Norwegians take the month of July off as part of what we call Fellesferie, which is our summer holiday. During this time the Ekornes office in Sykkylven slows down, giving employees a few weeks to recharge and spend time with loved ones.
This year I spent my holiday with my family in Fuerteventura, which is the oldest of the Canary Islands. This beautiful island was created more than 20 million years ago by volcanos, so it has a very unique terrain. It is also a Spanish island with Northern African influences, so the culture is unlike anywhere else.
One of the reasons we love to travel from Norway to Fuerteventura is because of the weather. This tourist spot has a moderate climate with gorgeous weather year round. To put it in perspective, the island lies on the same latitude as Mexico, so it is very pleasant and perfect for the beach.
Since the island is a big volcano, you’ll find volcanic stones all over, which makes it fun to explore. There is also a long sea coast of stunning beaches and sandbanks. Not to mention, the gourmet restaurants are incredible.
As the Interior Stylist for Ekornes, it is my job to stay ahead of the trends and bring styles around the world into home decor. That is why no matter where I travel, I am constantly looking for design inspiration and ideas to bring home with me. Fuerteventura is no different… the atmosphere is so special. This nice little town is full of charming white houses set amid sand dunes and volcanoes. Together with the clear blue water and tropical flowers, it’s a place that makes it easy to relax.
Why not add a touch of Fuerventura to your living room? Start with a white leather sofa paired with an aqua throw for a beach-like feel. Neutral walls can emulate the rocky terrain and hot pink flowers bring a touch of the outdoors in. Sit back, relax and drift off to your own piece of paradise.
