[dropcap]It never seems like we have enough time in the day. Between stressful jobs, household chores and demands from your children, our spare time is already a limited or non-existent commodity. And finding time to spend with your significant other may seem impossible, especially if you work at different times. But even with busy schedules, you can and should find the time for each other. Follow these tips for managing conflicting schedules and watch your relationship flourish.[/dropcap]
Schedule Time Together
Instead of hoping you each will have a free moment at the same time, make sure to schedule time together. Place a calendar on the refrigerator or keep a shared Google calendar on your phone for easy planning. Eat a meal or watch a movie together. Take a full day off together and go sightseeing or get a couple’s massage. Make sure to focus on the other person and prioritize your scheduled time together.
Discuss Small Issues by Email
When your time is limited, the last thing you want to do with your significant other is to talk about household chores, bills and grocery lists. Instead, use email and text messaging to take care of mundane household tasks and errands. This way you can enjoy yourselves when you’re together.
Adjust Sleep Routines
If you can, consider altering your sleep schedule to match your partner’s. If you’re a night owl, but your spouse is an early bird, try going to bed earlier and waking up earlier to find time together. Try it for a week or two. If it’s not working for you, find a compromise. Perhaps your spouse can stay up a little later than usual, and you can wake up a little earlier than you’d prefer.
Remind Each Other That You Care
When schedules prohibit you from seeing each other for extended periods of time, your relationship can really struggle. Little gestures of love and care can go a long way to maintain intimacy. Send text messages throughout the day. Leave romantic notes in your partner’s purse or briefcase. Do all of the chores one day. Send flowers and cards. These small actions may seem insignificant, but they can quickly add up and remind you why you fell in love with your partner.
It’s a busy world. Find time to spend with your significant other, even if it takes deliberate scheduling and compromises. And remember, even if you can’t be at the same place at the same time, find small ways to share your love for each other. Because nothing’s more important than love.
